Measles on the Rise: know the risks, check your status, protect yourself

Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by a virus. The disease of measles and the virus that causes it share the same name.The virus is highly contagious and can spread rapidly in areas where vaccination is not widespread.

Measles causes fever, runny nose, cough and a rash all over the body.

The number of measles cases in the United States reported so far this year has been the highest in the past 20 years, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Measles can be prevented by the combination MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine. .The MMR vaccine is strongly endorsed by medical and public health experts as safe and effective. Protect your family from Measles.

Measles is the most deadly of all childhood rash/fever illnesses. The disease spreads very easily, so it is important to protect against infection. In the United States, two doses are recommended for children;
  •  The first dose at 12–15 months of age
  •  The second dose before entering school, at 4–6 years of age

If you are an adult or teenager who has not had measles or has not received measles or MMR vaccine, you may require one or two doses of MMR vaccine. Getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent Measles. However, pregnant women should wait to get MMR vaccine until after they have given birth. Women should not become pregnant for 28 days following the receipt of the MMR vaccine or any of its components. (The combination MMRV vaccine is not licensed for those over 12 years old.) .

 If you are not sure if you need MMR vaccine to protect yourself from measles, contact a doctor / health  care provider and dicuss the matter, know the risks, check your statusprotect yourself
