MEN'S HEATH WEEK IS CELEBRATED 9-15 2014

As we celebrate Men’s Health Week, let us encourage men to pay even closer attention to their health, this month..
Compared to women; men are more likely to:

  • Use tobacco products - (It’s never too late to quit. Quitting smoking has immediate and long-term benefits.
  • Consume Alcohol
  •  Be involved in higher risk activities(i.e., work related or leisure)
  •  Delay seeking medical care(i.e., screening and or treatment)-

This evidence clearly shows that there are many CHALLENGES to be faced when seeking to improve men’s health.  However, it also highlights that men’s health can be improved in many significant ways - if we make the right CHOICES.  Men, themselves, have a key role to play in this process, but they require support, encouragement and opportunities to succeed.

  • ED ( Erectile Disfunction) ;approximately half of the men with diabetes experience ED. Nevertheless, good blood sugar control can minimize this risk. Of note, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), kidney disease, and multiple sclerosis each can lead to ED.  Each of these illnesses lead to ED by interfering with blood flow or nerve impulses throughout the body.

  • Prostate cancer - a common cancer that responds best to treatment when detected early.  At the start, prostate cancer does not cause symptoms however, as the cancer grows, you may have trouble urinating
  • Slow or reduced urinary stream
  • Dribbling or leakage of urine, most often after urinating
  • Straining when urinating, or not being able to empty out all of the urine
  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Bone pain or tenderness, most often in the lower back and pelvic bones (only when the cancer has spread)

  • Colon Cancer;  Colon Cancer is the third-leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men, but it doesn’t have to beit’s one of the most preventable cancers when the recommended screening occurs (an example of a type of screening procedure is colonoscopy)

  •  Heart disease - can be prevented and treated with early diagnosis.

It is very important to get the screening tests you need. So vist your health care provider and be open about your present health  status and follow the  recommendations. Screening tests can find diseases early, when they are typically easier to treat. Your health is your life , give it lots  of love and attention.
