Posted on 26 February, 2014 at 1:50
If you have difficulty sleeping it is essential to know whether an underlying  disease or condition is causing the problem.Sleep disorders are associated with a growing number of health problems; including;
  • Increase stress on the heart.
  • Reduce body response to flu Vaccine.
  • Increase Insulin Resistance.and Risk of Diabetes
  • shapes how well we feel, behave and Learn.

Sleep Apnea -  Is a common disorder, in which you have one or more pauses in breathing, while you sleep . Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes. They may occur 30 times or more an hour. Typically, normal breathing then starts again, sometimes with a loud snort or choking sound. It is the leading cause of excessive daytime sleepiness.

Most people who have Sleep Apnea, don't know they have it because it only occurs during sleep. If you suspect you may have Sleep Apnea, Ask a  family member or bed partner, if you snore heavily, choke, gasp or stop breathing during sleep and talk to your Doctor about it.

The most common type of Sleep Apnea is Obstructive Sleep Apnea. In this condition, the Airways(Mouth, Nose,Throat and Windpipe) collapses or become blocked during sleep. This causes shallow breathing or breathing pauses. When you try to breathe, any air that squeezes past the blockage can cause loud snoring.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea is more common in people who are  overweight but it can affect anyone. For example, small children who have enlarged tonsil tissues in their throats may have Obstructive Sleep Apnea. If left untreated, sleep apnea can result in a number of health problems including:
  • Hypertension,
  • Stroke,
  • reducing the flow of oxygen to vital organs,
  • Cardiomyopathy (enlargement of the muscle tissue of the heart),
  • Congestive heart failure,
  • Diabetes, and
  • Heart attacks.
In addition, untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for:
  • Job impairment.
  • Work-related accidents, and motor vehicle crashes.
  • Academic underachievement in children and adolescents.

Other Types of sleeping Disorder Includes:
  • Narcolepsy- Frequent attacks of drowsiness and sleepiness.

  • Insomnia - The inability to fall asleep or remain asleep or waking up not feeling restored or refreshed.

  • Periodic Limb movement Disorder- Twitching of the legs or creepy crawly feelings in the legs (R LS).

  • Sleepwalking(somnambulism) - Is a behavior disorder that originates during deep sleep and results in walking while asleep.
  •                           It is much more common in children than adults and is more likely to occur if a person is sleep deprived. Because a sleepwalker typically remains in deep sleep throughout the episode, he or she may be difficult to awaken and will probably not remember the sleepwalking incident.
